Graduation Season

As the summer rolls around, we are busier than ever with more outside play time in our Preschool and Babies Home. In this season of fun and excitement, we are getting ready for November graduations across our Education Programmes–from our Grade R graduates to our Teacher Trainees.

At Urban Kids Preschool, 34 Grade R boys and girls will show off their polished songs, poems, and presentations for family and friends on 27 November. They’ll share ‘What I want to be when I grow up’ and we’ll share a goodie bag of stationery to help them with those overwhelming Grade 1 stationery lists. (Thank you to our Mandela Day donors for sponsoring these packs!) Then we’ll send them off to start their formal school journey with a stronger foundation and 3x more of a chance to matriculate than they had before they stepped through our doors.

Our Teacher Trainees are a WHOLE separate story! We have 34 ladies from Olievenhoutbosch who have devoted themselves to weekly training throughout this year, with plenty of homework and pop-in visits where we assess and support them each month. Now it’s their turn to dance down the aisle of the main hall and celebrate! (Thank you Urban Life for such beautiful facilities to host them well!) They each have developed the skills to teach their classrooms well, uplifting hundreds of preschoolers into a stronger future. Now they also have a certificate, and greater courage to show their schools and communities the value they add.

Then there is our Babies Home where throughout our the year we celebrate another different type of graduation. This is a much quieter but very meaningful occasion in our Babies Home with every adoption and reunification, as a child is connected into their Forever Family. Today, we were reminiscing on one of our winter-adoptions, Mr. T. Born with serious issues, this incredibly fragile boy looked like he would be with us for at least a few years. The doctors had serious developmental concerns about Mr. T, and doubted he would be able to go for adoption without a family committed to raising a special needs child with serious interventions needed. These stories for us are the chance to rise to a challenge! Our team went to work day in and out, sowing with love and care into his little life. Every day, our Developmental Stimulation Coordinator worked with Mr. T on this or that exercise, always learning something new as she took him from one therapy to another. In June, we celebrated as a 10-month Mr. T went to his Forever Family. Cleared for adoption, he had far-surpassed any developmental goal the doctors dared to give him. Now, we celebrate as his family has had the joy of his 1st birthday TOGETHER! What a story!

We are privileged to step into his life and the lives of so many others and help them FLOURISH because of your generous and ongoing support! THANK YOU for making a difference to Mr. T and so many others by your partnership with Botshabelo.
